New high-tech CCTV system unveiled at Canberra Stadium

Canberra, Australia, September 10, 2008 - Attorney General Simon Corbell today unveiled the new state-of-the-art Closed-Circuit Television system at Canberra Stadium which is part of the ACT Labor Government's comprehensive upgrade of Canberra's CCTV network.

"I am pleased to unveil a new state-of-the-art CCTV system that will improve safety and security responses at Canberra Stadium, the Territory's premier sporting venue," Mr Corbell said.

"The new CCTV system at Canberra Stadium is part of the ACT Labor Government's comprehensive upgrade of Canberra's CCTV network to strengthen public safety and security at entertainment precincts and sporting venues.

"As announced in the 2008/09 Budget in May, the ACT Labor Government has committed $8 million over four years to upgrade the Civic Safety CCTV network; expand the CCTV network to the Manuka and Kingston entertainment precincts, Manuka Oval and Exhibition Park; and build a new monitoring facility at the Winchester Police Centre in Belconnen. "This will help maintain a fair and safe community for all Canberrans."

During major sporting events the Canberra Stadium CCTV system will be controlled at a purpose-built venue command centre, with all footage also recorded at a secondary site. It will also be linked into the ACT CCTV Monitoring Centre to be built at the Winchester Police Centre in Belconnen.

"The CCTV system uses state-of-the-art technology, including high-definition 16 megapixel digital cameras with facial recognition capability, to provide comprehensive coverage of the stadium and its surrounds," Mr Corbell said.

"A wide range of fixed and pan/tilt/zoom cameras augment these high-resolution cameras allowing venue or emergency services staff to monitor and control crowds in the event of an emergency.

"By ensuring public safety through effective security arrangements, Canberra Stadium will become a very attractive option to organisers of international sporting events leading into our centenary celebrations in 2013."
